Behavioral Interview

Course Overview

For software engineers preparing for the behavioral round of a tech interview loop, from mid-level to staff and engineering manager. You will build a bank of real, tagged stories, learn how interviewers score them, and deliver answers that hold up under follow-up questions at the level you are aiming for (30 lessons in 15 sections, about 11 hours).

Course Content

Section 1: Introduction: Why This Round Decides Offers

See why one behavioral note can outweigh strong technical rounds, what this course produces, and how to plan your preparation, including a one-week path. 2 lessons, about 25 minutes.

Section 2: The Behavioral Interview Roadmap

Learn where behavioral evidence is collected, the formats you will meet, how interviewers take notes and score, and how the debrief reaches a decision and a level. 2 lessons, about 40 minutes.

Section 3: What Companies Are Looking For

Understand how companies turn "good engineer" into scored competencies, how level is read from scope, autonomy and influence, which red flags end loops, and where your own gaps are. 2 lessons, about 45 minutes.

Section 4: High-Signal Storytelling

Structure stories so the scoreable facts survive the interviewer's notes, using a five-part frame, a time budget, a clear "I", defensible results, and preparation for follow-up drilling. 2 lessons, about 60 minutes.

Section 5: The Essential Questions

Map hundreds of question phrasings onto twelve underlying questions, prepare the answers you will definitely be asked, and build a tagged story bank that covers them all. 2 lessons, about 50 minutes.

Section 6: Taking Initiative

Show that you found a problem nobody assigned, got agreement in proportion to its blast radius, and carried it through, and tell that story at mid, senior or staff level. 2 lessons, about 45 minutes.

Section 7: Delivery

Tell delivery stories that are scored on what you cut under an external constraint, when you knew the date was at risk, and how you told people. 2 lessons, about 45 minutes.

Section 8: Problem Solving and Deep Dive

Choose a technical story you can defend several layers deep, narrate a diagnosis as systematic narrowing, and handle the moment the interviewer drills past what you know. 2 lessons, about 55 minutes.

Section 9: Earning Trust and Dealing with Conflict

Pick conflict stories that score, state the other side's argument at full strength, show what changed in you, and prepare for the decision that went against you. 2 lessons, about 55 minutes.

Section 10: Learning and Growth

Answer feedback and weakness questions with a specific trigger, a behaviour change someone could observe, and its effect, rather than a reading list or a disguised strength. 2 lessons, about 40 minutes.

Section 11: Customer and User Focus

Show that evidence about real users changed a technical decision and that you measured the user's outcome, including when your users are other engineers. 2 lessons, about 40 minutes.

Section 12: Innovation

Show that you questioned a default, weighed real alternatives and tested cheaply before committing, and find strong material in things you simplified or deleted. 2 lessons, about 40 minutes.

Section 13: Developing Others

Tell mentorship and feedback stories about one named person, with the time you gave up and an outcome that belongs to them, plus the manager version for underperformance. 2 lessons, about 45 minutes.

Section 14: Strategic Leadership and Thinking Big

Give staff-level evidence of thinking big: a forecast several quarters out, a defended decision about what to exclude, persuasion through named objections, and honest adoption numbers. 2 lessons, about 50 minutes.

Section 15: Nailing the Interview

Rehearse out loud, run a structured mock, manage pacing and blanks in the room, handle questions you have no story for, and debrief after each round. 2 lessons, about 50 minutes.
